In this seasonal guide, we’ll unveil its hidden gems, must-visit landmarks, culinary delights, and cultural hotspots. Whether you’re a history buff, food enthusiast, or art lover, Zagreb invites you to appreciate its unique character at every turn.
First things first…
The city of Zagreb is almost perfectly centered in the middle of the country, in the area known as Middle Croatia. It is nestled between the southern slopes of Medvednica mountain and the Sava River’s northern bank.
Despite its long history (spanning well over a millennia), Zagreb has only enjoyed the status of a capital city for just a bit over 200 years! It took the title from Varaždin in the north after the great fire of 1776, when the government permanently moved here.
And this is where the already rich history of the city starts to become even richer! The whole city suddenly experiences a boom in population and economy, becoming the vibrant, cultural center of Croatia we know today.
Originally built in the 13th century and reconstructed after an earthquake in the 19th century, this Gothic masterpiece stands at the heart of the city. Also known as the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the cathedral features stained glass windows and the Chapel of St. Stephen.
Beyond its spiritual role, the cathedral also serves as a cultural focal point and is a meeting place for Zagrebians. Explore this enduring symbol that seamlessly blends historical grandeur with contemporary life in Zagreb.
This 13th-century church boasts a distinctive tiled roof with the medieval coats of arms of Zagreb and Croatia. Its Gothic architecture, including a portal adorned with sculptures, reflects medieval craftsmanship.
Inside, you can admire works by renowned sculptor Ivan Meštrović. Beyond its religious significance, the church serves as a symbol of national pride.
This historic landmark is surrounded by political and cultural institutions (including the Parliament), adding to its historical significance.
The Upper Town, or Gornji Grad is a medieval district with cobblestone streets, well-preserved architecture, and cultural richness. Visit iconic landmarks like the already-mentioned St. Mark’s Church and Lotrščak Tower for panoramic views.
Here you can experience hidden gems such as the Stone Gate, Tkalciceva Street, and the remains of Bloody Bridge that once connected the two oldest boroughs. Gornji Grad puts Zagreb’s past on display, where every corner tells a captivating story of the city’s heritage.
Tkalciceva Street is a bustling zone, filled with bars, restaurants, and cute shops, all bidding you to stay for the day!
This verdant oasis invites visitors to escape the urban bustle and immerse themselves in nature. It is the oldest public park in Southeast Europe and a beloved recreational space for locals and tourists alike.
Home to Maksimir Stadium (Croatia’s first football stadium) the park boasts expansive green lawns, dense forests, and serene lakes. Wander along tree-lined paths, explore the botanical diversity, and encounter amazing gazebos and pavilions.
The park’s centerpiece is the zoo. Founded in 1925, it houses a diverse collection of animal species in a spacious and naturalistic environment. Whether you seek a stroll, a lakeside picnic, or a visit to the zoo, you can find a tranquil retreat here.
Zrinjevac is a picturesque urban retreat renowned for its elegance and tranquility. And it’s located right downtown. Lined with century-old plane trees, vibrant flowerbeds, charming sculptures, and historical buildings it serves as a serene escape.
Built in the 19th century it is a part of the famed Lenuci’s Horseshoe — a series of interconnected green spaces. Its central fountain, walking paths, and open-air pavilion create a leisurely atmosphere. Throughout the year, Zrinjevac hosts various festivals, markets, and artistic performances, adding a dynamic touch to its timeless beauty.
Centered at the heart of Zagreb, this bustling square serves as the city’s vibrant focal point. Surrounded by elegant architecture, charming cafes, and vibrant street life, it encapsulates Zagreb’s unique blend of tradition and modernity.

Our local guide Karmela of Zagreb Gourmet Tours has been so kind to share some of these experiences in this guide. And the best thing — you can do these practically year-round. So, let’s see what’s on the Zagreb menu!
By strolling through the center of Zagreb, guests will discover the city’s history and savor dishes, products, and authentic Croatian wines at seven locations. Starting the tour like true locals with coffee, we proceed with a selection of island cheeses, followed by a visit to the oldest Zagreb market, Dolac.
The journey continues with tasting traditional štrukli, the most famous cured meats from all over Croatia, olive and pumpkin oils, and a selection of indigenous wines. We conclude Croatia’s gastronomic story with a traditional Zagreb lunch – roast duck with mlinci and dessert.
This city tour covers a walk through the streets of the three most important parts of the city center – Kaptol, Gradec, and the Lower Town. Guests will be able to follow the city’s development stories from its beginnings in the 11th century to the present day. The tour allows you to explore its architecture, landmarks, historical figures, and current way of life.
During the tour, which lasts up to 3 hours, there are also two shorter breaks. Enjoying coffee at one of the typical Zagreb terraces and, at the end of the tour, tasting traditional štrukli.
Karmela can also take you to interactive culinary workshops on Croatian cuisine. A shorter workshop of about two and a half hours involves the preparation, baking, and štrukli tasting. The other workshop is dedicated to the entire national cuisine.
In the longer workshop, guests prepare three dishes as a complete menu for lunch, lasting up to four hours. Both workshops include a visit to the iconic Dolac Market, just a few steps away from the culinary studio, as well as enjoying a glass of authentic Croatian wine that perfectly complements the prepared food.
